What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device (computer, smartphone or tablet) when you visit. They serve to remember your settings, to analyse how the site is used, or to improve your experience. Besides cookies, a website may use other browser storage techniques — such as local storage (localStorage) — which serve a similar purpose but are technically not cookies. Cookies cannot access other data on your device and, on their own, contain no information that directly identifies you as a person.

The current state

This website loads Google Analytics 4 (measurement id G-QH4XG39EXJ) to count page views. Consent for analytics storage is denied by default for every visitor, in every country, and there is no banner that changes that — so the tag writes no analytics cookie and stores no identifier on your device. No advertising tag is integrated.

In short: this website sets no cookies for analytics or advertising purposes. Measurement runs cookieless — Google receives aggregated pings carrying the page address, the referring page, an approximate region derived from your IP address, and device and browser type. What you type into the calculator is not part of that: it runs in your browser and is never sent anywhere.

How consent works

Free operation is intended to be funded later through the Google AdSense advertising network; that tag is NOT integrated today. Once it is, the same rule applies to analytics and advertising cookies for every visitor worldwide, regardless of the country you visit from:

• Analytics and advertising cookies are set only after you consent through Google’s certified consent message. Until then the Google tags run continuously in cookieless mode (Google Consent Mode v2): on accept you get personalised advertising and full analytics, on reject it stays cookieless. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).
• There is no country or region where analytics or personalised advertising are on by default, or where cookies are set without your consent.

While no analytics or advertising cookies are set, we deliberately keep no concrete cookie list here. As soon as analytics and advertising are active, a full overview will be published — with the name, provider, purpose and storage duration of each individual cookie — so that no cookies are described here that are not actually being set.

Technically necessary storage

Independently of analytics and advertising, the site stores a small amount of information in your browser’s local storage so that it can remember your choices. These entries are technically necessary, serve exclusively to make the site work, and are stored without any consent. This is local storage (localStorage), and so technically not cookies. On an ordinary visit that is a single entry: the note that you have closed the language suggestion, so that it does not reappear on every visit; the gr_int flag described below is added only if you ask for it. It remains until you delete it, and contains no name, no email address and no identifier that could be used to build a user profile.

Excluding our own visits

One exception, named here rather than passed over in silence: on every page view the measurement code checks whether the gr_int flag is present in your browser. That is our own exclusion for internal visits, so that our test traffic does not end up in the figures. It is written only when a page is opened with ?internal=1 appended — as a cookie with a lifetime of one year, and additionally in local storage. On an ordinary visit nothing is written, and nothing on this site links to it. It holds a single flag and nothing about you. You delete it by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

Third-party cookies

Analytics and advertising cookies would be third-party cookies: after launch they would be set by Google LLC (USA) via the Google Analytics 4 and Google AdSense services. Google LLC is subject to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, through which the European Commission has found an adequate level of data protection for certified companies. Google Analytics 4 truncates IP addresses; the advertising network may, as a third party, process further data for advertising purposes (including the IP address and device identifiers). How Google uses data and how you set or switch off personalised advertising can be found at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and adssettings.google.com. Such third-party cookies are not set: analytics storage is denied by default and no advertising tag is integrated.

Regardless of which country you visit from, you can change or withdraw the choice you made in the certified consent message at any time — the button below reopens that message:

You can also control personalised advertising at any time through your Google ad settings and your browser settings. Independently of that, you can delete cookies at any time through your browser, or block them from being set in the first place:
